Only 30 minutes east of downtown Cleveland, Lake County is the perfect weekend getaway for your family. Whether you like animals, history, beaches, scavenger hunts, or corn festivals, fall family fun is waiting for you here.
Lake Farmpark, run by Lake Metroparks, is gearing up for the early fall with Village Peddler. I enjoyed a fall afternoon in the country while strolling shaded paths, lined with more than 165 craftsmen and artisans selling their wares and displaying their craft at the annual Village Peddler Festival at Lake Metroparks Farmpark and can’t wait to go back next year! Built on quality, uniqueness, and tradition, this quaint outdoor American marketplace features continuous tents of handmade treasures and unique items, music, wagon rides, and a gourmet and harvest market. Admission is $7, seniors $6, children 2-11 $4, and children under 2 are free. Plenty of free parking is available. Don’t forget, access to the farm animals, milking stations, and horse barn are included in the price of admission!
In Willoughby, the Fall Corn Fest features entertainment, concession food, games, corn hole tournaments, a kids’ adventure tent, fireworks, classic car show, 5K run, arts and crafts vendors, roasted sweet corn and much more. This is a great way to get your fall started off early, and enjoy some really delicious treats in the process!
New year, New name!
Mentor’s favorite festival is back with a new name, a new date, and a brand new feel. Mentor CityFest – the largest community event brought to you by the City of Mentor on the grounds of Civic Center Park. In celebration often includes a parade, exhibitors, and local food vendors, but there are tons of exciting additions like the Cincinnati Circus Company with its flying trapeze show, stilt walkers, acrobats, flame throwers, and amazing performers.
Maybe festivals aren’t your thing – and that’s ok! Lake County also has a variety of activities that are open to the public throughout the year that are perfect for families of all ages.
If you like history, James A. Garfield’s home in Mentor is a great place to tour and go behind the ropes. Tours take around an hour and you are free to walk around the grounds for free afterwards for as long as you would like. After that, head over to the Lake County History Center for their ever-changing exhibits and historic village in the back, or Historic Kirtland Village for a step back in time.
Are you more of a nature-loving family? Lake Metroparks, Holden Arboretum, and Mentor Marsh are for you, and if you are specifically a beach-loving family, then Headlands Beach (the longest in Ohio) and Fairport Harbor Marine Museum are fantastic.
If you are interested in more of an eclectic experience in touring Lake County, check out the Lake County Visitors Bureau’s new GeoTour. Perfect for the tech-savvy children (and adults) in your family, this scavenger hunt is sure to delight!
See you soon!
