In December, The George Gund Foundation awarded a grant in support of the Cleveland Plus Web site, www.PlusCollege.com. Plus College is a site designed to familiarize Northeast Ohio’s 180,000 college students with the region’s arts, entertainment and cultural assets, while connecting them with internship opportunities. The grant will provide for a project manager to help raise awareness for the site among its target population while identifying revenue streams to sustain it.

Northeast Ohio attracts movie projects
Three of the first four movies to receive a Motion Picture Tax Credit under a new Ohio incentive program will be made in Northeast Ohio. The Ohio Department of Development recently announced that the four films will share $7 million in tax credits.
 
Israeli medical device company chooses Akron 
Leaders banking on medical research and development being the heart of the region's economy got a boost when a cardiac-testing company based in Israel decided to locate its U.S. headquarters in Akron. NI Medical Ltd. plans to set up operations in the Akron Global Business Accelerator in downtown Akron by March.
 
Cleveland Plus company makes list of “The World's Most Intriguing Startups”
Phycal, a JumpStart Ventures portfolio company creating algal biofuel, was identified as one of BusinessWeek’s “25 Most Intriguing Companies.”
 
Ohio public schools rank fifth
Ohio earned its highest rating ever on the well-regarded report cards issued each year since 1997 by Education Week newspaper. 
 
Diversifying industries positively impacting Northeast Ohio's economy
Team NEO’s most recent Cleveland Plus® Economic Review indicates the region is trending closer in employment and gross regional product to the United States in this current recession than in the 1981 recession. This change is likely due to the shift in industry mix. The Cleveland Plus region's economy is more diversified now, with increases in health care; headquarters; professional, scientific and technical services; and other industries.
 
Youngstown makes strides toward being technical hub
The creation of Youngstown's downtown Tech Block is taking a step forward as a San Francisco research company opens an office in a recently renovated building. Revere Data expects to hire as many as 50 employees within two years.
 
EfficientGovNow competition returns for a second round
Created by the Fund for Our Economic Future, EfficientGovNow is a competitive awards program that encourages and accelerates government collaboration and efficiency by providing funding to government collaboration projects as selected by the residents of Cleveland Plus. Now is your chance to help spur the second round of the program.
 
Downtown Cleveland Alliance Seeks Young Professionals
Launched in 2009, the nonprofit’s DCA City Advocate program brings together a diverse range of young professionals who are eager to play a role in the revitalization and progress of downtown Cleveland. The deadline to apply is February 26 at 5 p.m.
 
Cleveland, land bank and others get $41 million to improve neighborhoods
Cuyahoga County's new land bank, along with its partners, received nearly $41 million in federal stimulus funds to demolish blighted homes and renovate others in 20 targetted neighborhoods throughout the county.

Run With Your Heart Trail Challenge: Feb. 14
This race benefits the Center for Families and Children, a local health and human service agency providing early learning, youth development and behavioral health services to over 12,000 families and individuals in need. The event takes place on the bridle trails of the North Chagrin Reservation in Willoughby Hills.
 
Jazz Brunch with Joe Augustine and Trio: Feb. 14
Celebrate Valentine's Day at the Stage Door with jazz pianist Joe Augustine and his trio while enjoying a hot brunch buffet. EJ Thomas Hall’s Stage Door events place all the action – from the performer to the audience – on the venue’s stage floor, transforming it into an intimate concert venue.
 
On the Dark Side of Twilight at Great Lakes Theater: Select dates Feb. 16 - March 11
This touring production, making 21 stops across the region, is homage to four pivotal moments in the history of classic vampire literature that, when taken as a whole, describe a complete, two century epic centering on the character of Aubrey Porlock. 
 
Small Business Development Center Entrepreneur Week: Feb. 22 - 26
The Small Business Development Center, located at Kent State University, Stark County, is holding its first annual Stark County Entrepreneur Week. Highlights include local entrepreneur panel discussions, training seminars, a student competition to promote arts in the county and keynote address from Dan Gilbert, chairman and founder of Quicken Loans Inc.
 
NorTech Innovation Awards: Feb. 24
Join NorTech, in partnership with Crain’s Cleveland Business, as it celebrates Northeast Ohio’s latest achievements in world-class technology and honors the remarkable minds behind them who are setting new standards of advancement and innovation.
 
JumpStart presents Extending the Runway: Building Better Boards: Feb. 24
Dave Berkus, who brings decades of experience as a venture capitalist and technology entrepreneur, will lead the seminar with a discussion on startup governance, speaking specifically to boards as a strategic advantage and important tool for early-stage companies.
 
A YP Web site in a Weekend?!: Feb. 26 - 28
The Cleveland Professional 20/30 Club is hosting an unprecedented weekend event beginning February 26. Scores of Web developers, programmers, graphic designers and others are coming together to build a Web site for the club. At the end of the weekend, the new site will debut. Once polished, the source code will be shared with any Northeast Ohio young professional group who asks. Want to get involved?
 
Pattern ID Exhibit at Akron Art Museum: Through May 9
Pattern ID features fifteen artists of diverse origins who have seized on pattern and dress as powerful visual connectors between themselves, their histories and their audiences. More than 40 works show the artists’ ability to freely mix motifs from popular culture, history and art history to transform the meanings of patterns.
 
The Rink at Wade Oval: Through the end of winter
The Rink at Wade Oval in University Circle is back for a second year of outdoor fun. Admission to Cleveland’s only outdoor ice rink is free and skate rentals are $3.

 
 

Pass the Plus is giving away four tickets to The Great Big Home & Garden Expo, taking place Feb. 6-14 at Cleveland’s I-X Center. With celebrity appearances from Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and HGTV’s Matt Fox and Shari Hiller, three inspiring Idea Homes, the Garden Showcase with 21 gardens theatrically lit in its own hall, and hundreds of exhibitors, this show will be a must-attend event. East Fourth Street, a 600,000 square-foot mixed-use historic redevelopment with unique restaurants and clubs and a diverse mix of apartments, has strengthened Cleveland’s economy since its establishment as a popular downtown destination.
 
In the mid-1990s, real estate developers started renovating the district’s historic buildings to create a tight strip of restaurants and clubs that matched the evolving entertainment preferences of Northeast Ohioans. Today, the area has restaurants, bars, a 16-lane bowling alley, a coffee shop, theater, nightclub and concert stage that attracts national acts. Above it all are more than 300 rental apartments.

During the winter season, Northeast Ohioans flock to the region's best diners for a little bit of old time charm and a big serving of comfort. Sure, winter is long, but the cuisine offered at these establishments will warm the soul. 
 
 
Local diners are getting national attention, too, with both Lucky’s Cafe in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood and Melt in Lakewood being featured on The Food Network’s hit show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
