Manufacturing Day Looks to Inspire a New Generation of Manufacturers

Ohio Celebrates Manufacturing Month Throughout October

Created in 2012, Manufacturing Day is a national initiative designed to encourage the next generation of talent to pursue careers in manufacturing. While October 6 officially marks Manufacturing Day, Governor John Kasich has named the entire month of October as Ohio Manufacturing Month. Throughout the month, manufacturing companies are encouraged to host events that will help shift perceptions about what it means to work in today’s modern manufacturing industry.

Ohio ManufacturingSince 2012, Manufacturing Day has grown tremendously and played a significant role in changing how students, parents and the general public think about manufacturing. From 2012 – 2016, Manufacturing Day organizers have seen a 1,000% increase in the number of events being hosted across the country, with nearly 1,600 events planned for 2017. More importantly, students are learning what a career in manufacturing could mean for them.

In 2016, students who participated in Manufacturing Day were surveyed about their experience. Below is a snapshot of what the survey results showed.

Students who participated in Manufacturing Day 2016 were:

  • 84% more convinced manufacturing provides rewarding careers
  • 64% were more motivated to pursue a career in manufacturing
  • 89% are more aware of manufacturing opportunities in their community

This gradual shift in thinking is a major win for the manufacturing industry which has been actively working to dispel common misconceptions about what it means to work in manufacturing. Unlike manufacturing jobs of the past, today’s jobs represent clean, high-tech opportunities with room for advancement.

With a rich manufacturing heritage, Manufacturing Day is especially important in Ohio as the state looks to build a new generation of talent.  As a leading manufacturing state in terms of employment (Ohio ranked #3 in Business Facilities’ 2017 Ranking), Ohio has deep ties to the manufacturing industry, which is a major economic contributor. For many Ohio manufacturers, attracting a new generation of talent is a crucial factor in ensuring their long-term growth and success.

As part of this year’s Manufacturing Day, more than 100 events will take place across the State of Ohio. To learn more about events taking place in Ohio, visit the Manufacturing Day 2017 Event Calendar.
